Congratulations on your pregnancy! This is a time of awe at the miracle taking place inside of you and of joyful anticipation of the arrival of your new baby. But does your excitement dim when you contemplate the baby’s birth? Our culture is saturated with negative images of childbirth: it is usually portrayed as a time of pain and peril that mothers must be saved from. In fact, that’s more myth than reality. Your body, which conceived and now nurtures your growing baby, knows how to birth, too. Childbirth is a powerful experience. But throughout history and across cultures, women have shared with one another the wisdom that keeps the birthing mother in control of that power, rather than at its mercy.
